Artist trading cards, or ATCs as they are more commonly known, are unique pieces of artwork on a miniature scale. Most people know what trading cards are, and ATCs are very similar, though the difference is that they are handmade and used to swap people’s own creativity and interests.

The only restriction with an ATC is that is must measure 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches, or 64mm by 89 mm- the same size as a playing card. Apart from that you can do pretty much anything you like onto it. Just doing a simple Internet search will provide you with lots of interesting and different ideas. Your own ATCs will most definitely reflect your own tastes and favourite techniques but you can also you them to experiment new things as they are only small projects.

Montage is a technique a lot of people use to make ATCs. Montage is very similar to collage; with collage you use pieces of materials to produce a picture, where as with montage you layer ready-made images to produce another. Montage is just one technique you may wish to try but if you are new to ATCs then you will probably wish to start with techniques you are already familiar with, such as stamping, embossing, collage, or simply layering papers and text. As the only restrictions with ATCs are the size, the possibility of designs is endless.

The basic idea of ATC is to trade. The most conventional way for ATCs to get swapped is when people meet, but nowadays there are many ATC swapping groups set up over the Internet. It is easy to get involved trading ATCs no matter where you are.
